The Economics of Professional Road Cycling

Over the past decade, a growing body of academic literature on the economics of road cycling has been amassed. This book is the first volume to bring together a majority of the academic research and knowledge on the economics and management of professional road cycling. Each chapter treats a particular economic aspect of the sport, from organizational structure to marketing, labor, game theory, and competitive balance. By discussing the existing research and complementing it with the newest concepts, ideas and data on professional road cycling, this book sets an agenda for further academic research while providing insights for all stakeholders in cycling: governments, cycling's governing bodies, team managers, race organizers, sponsors, media. Furthermore, the unique characteristics of...

Selling the Yellow Jersey

The Tour de France is the most-watched annual sporting event on television, surpassed only in viewership by the quadrennial Olympics and soccer World Cup. But while those events are explicitly international, the Tour is a distinctively French event. Eric Reed tackles the dual questions of what it has meant for France to host this media extravaganza every year, and what it has meant for the world of cycling that its premier event is uniquely French. The story of the men who have raced the Tour de France has been told many times, but the growth of the Tour itself is taken for granted. From its beginnings as a stunt to sell newspapers in 1903 up to today's media spectacle (produced by a staff of 300, with dozens of cars, trucks, buses, and helicopters, and watched by more people than any...

Vincenzo Nibali takes solo victory at Tre Valli Varesine Less than 24 hours after arriving back in Italy after the Road World Championships Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) has soloed to victory in Tre Valli Varesine. Nibali attacked on the final climb of the 198. 5km race having been part of a select group of riders at the front of the race. While the chasers hesitated, Nibali opened up a gap and was able to ride away to victory. The Italian national champion crossed the line nine seconds ahead of Sergey Firsanov (RusVelo) who accelerated away from the 13-rider chase group to take second place. “The guys did a great job today, especially Fabio Aru, without them I wouldn’t have won,” Nibali said. Earlier in the day a 20-rider breakaway got clear but they were caught ahead of the nine finishing circuits in Varese. Other counterattacks were similarly accounted for in the closing kilometres before Astana forced a split in the bunch, from which Nibali attacked with 3. 5km to go. The Frenchman was three seconds faster than LottoNL-Jumbo’s Martijn Keizer and 12... Nathan Haas and Omar Fraile join MTN-Qhubeka/Dimension Data by Shane Stokes. Australian rider Nathan Haas and the Spaniard Omar Fraile are the two latest signings to the MTN-Qhubeka/Team Dimension Data lineup for 2016, joining Mark Cavendish, Mark Renshaw and Bernhard Eisel in coming on board. Haas has been racing with the Cannondale-Garmin team for the past four seasons, winning the Japan Cup for a second time along the way, and clocking up other results and helping his teammates to their own successes. “I’m incredibly excited to join the team because I feel that it, on the most inherent level, represents the true global and worldwide reach that professional cycling is moving in,” Haas said. “Not only does the team compete at the highest level of the sport, it translate our love of sport across all aspects of cycling, weighing equal importance on the bike as a necessity of transport, environment, and sport. The team’s general manager Brian Smith says that Haas exemplifies the type of rider the team is about. “A great personality and willing to race aggressively. This type of visibility in races is very important to our Bicycles Change Lives campaign. I think his style of racing will compliment another couple of our team riders and elevate them to more success together. Fraile comes to the team from another Pro Continental outfit, Caja Rural-Seguros RGA. He had a superb 2015 season, winning the King of the Mountains competition in the Vuelta a España, and also taking the same prize in the Vuelta al Pais Vasco. It’s a team I can’t wait to join. The atmosphere ONE Pro Cycling has created gets me excited to be racing again. That Was the Year That Was - 1971
1971 This could well be the year that marked the start of the digital age when the Microprocessor was invented. We also saw the use of more and more of the transistor technology in use in things like hand held calculators which although are still very expensive over time will drop in price and increase in function to where we are today. It is also the first year North Sea Oil production begins in Norway. One other major change is the change to Decimalisation in the UK on and Ireland on February 15th .
