What I Do

What if you could look at a psycho biographical profile in 48,000 words that cover 48 years in the life of a nurse/counselor/teacher. Theories abound and some say, "The truth is in there!" This book is being replaced by the boojk, "Communication and Living, Through Time."

•Follow me on Facebook• I had been listening to a song recently, one that I have been listening to for almost 20 years now. At the beginning of the track they have a sample from the movie ‘The Sheltering Sky’ :. “Death is always on the way, but the fact that you don’t know when it will arrive seems to take away from the finiteness of life. But because we don’t know, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well. Yet everything happens a certain number of times, and a very small number, really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, some afternoon that’s so deeply a part of your being that you can’t even conceive of your life without it. Perhaps four or five times more. Perhaps not even. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise. Perhaps twenty. And yet it all seems limitless. I think often about how much of life is. forgettable. And I don’t really mean it in a bad way. it’s life, ya know. Driving here and there, standing in lines, sitting on our couch, on our computers, on-the-clock at your day job, and just…. I also think sometimes about how awesome. and scary it would be to be able to retrieve ANY statistic about your life:. How many pounds of ice cream have I eaten in my life. How many times have I sneezed. How much money have I spent in my whole life. How many hours have I spent browsing Facebook. How many hours have I used the restroom on-the-job. (Quick do some math to find out approximately how much money I’ve been paid to use the restroom…). How many times have I told my son I loved him. How many times have I clicked a camera shutter. How many times have I felt at home. How many hikes have I been on. How many leaves have I touched. How many streams have I stepped in. That’s my thing about landscape and nature photography: It helps me remember. I have been to Abiqua falls more times than I can count. But I remember two excursions the most. I remember the feelings. I remember who I was with and the journeys on the way. And I remember those experiences so profoundly because I came back with a photo. Super special internet high-five if you know the song I’m talking about.

Fall Back
Well, I knew somewhere in the country there would be at least one person who’d forget to set their clock back an hour. Little did I know that person would be a member of my own household. My youngest, who just started her very first job this weekend, woke up one hour earlier than she needed to this morning. When my wife informed her of her error she was not a happy camper. Hey, at least she was on time. =) I hope all of my American friends (except Arizona & Hawaii) remembered to fall back an hour.
Long Beach Harbor Patrol Say No Photography From a Public Sidewalk
I just got back from shooting for a week in Los Angeles and have to say that the highlight of my trip was shooting industrial stuff down in Long Beach Harbor with Photographer David Sommars. David is an amazing photographer who regularly shoots industrial stuff around L.A. and he shared with me some of the most fantastic vantage points to shoot this sort of photography in Long Beach. Unfortunately our photowalk around the Port of Long Beach was not without incident. Three times we were blinted while photographing. I've been stopped plenty of times while legally shooting in the past. Most of the times I've been able to be respectful but insistent on my legal rights to shoot wherever I'm shooting. Every so often though an incident turns into a more serious altercation. The first two times Sommars and I were stopped we were stopped by private security agents working for Securitas on behalf of BP's Carson Refinery. They asked us not to shoot the refinery and suggested that...
No Photography, These Animals Are Highly Sensitive
One of the things that annoys me to no end is when I see "no photography" policies that are put into place in order to restrict flash photography. Recently I encountered an example of this at the new California Academy of Sciences, a wonderful and remarkable museum where my family has purchased a family membership and which I've already shot pretty extensively so far. I have to give the Academy high marks for allowing photography in the entire museum for the most part. It's an incredible architecturally significant (and actually living) structure. The exhibits really are first rate and the fact that you can shoot there (and even wear a backpack) are really great. But I was disappointed recently when I visited and saw several "no photography" signs in the basement aquarium of the new museum. People were ignoring these signs pretty much and shooting anyways, but that's beside the point. I sat and watched one of the "no photography" exhibits for a...
